Richard Giragosian
Richard Giragosian is a seasoned expert in security and international relations with more than 35 years of policy experience focused on the post-Soviet space, the South Caucasus, and broader geopolitical dynamics. He is the Founding Director of the Regional Studies Center (RSC), an independent think tank based in Yerevan, Armenia, and also serves as a guest lecturer at the NATO Defence College in Rome. Since relocating to Armenia in 2006, Giragosian has become a prominent voice in regional policy analysis, advising a wide range of international institutions and governments.
His consulting work includes engagements with the Asian Development Bank, the European Union Delegation to Armenia, the European Parliament, the French Ministry of Defence, the International Crisis Group, and the OSCE, as well as the U.S. Departments of Defence and State. Alongside this policy work, he has held academic roles as a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe’s Natolin Campus and as a Senior Expert at Yerevan State University’s Centre for European Studies.
Giragosian has an extensive background in military and security education, having lectured at the U.S. Army’s John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, and contributed to research projects for the Naval Post-Graduate School, the U.S. Navy’s Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, and the U.S. Air Force Special Operations School. Earlier in his career, he worked as an analyst and research consultant for organisations such as Abt Associates, the New America Foundation, and the Center for National Policy.
From 1991 onward, Giragosian also served for 9 years as a Professional Staff Member of the U.S. Congress’s Joint Economic Committee, where he was the principal staffer covering the former Soviet Union and China. In parallel, he has been an active public commentator, contributing to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Jane’s Information Group, Oxford Analytica, and Newsweek (international edition). He is also a prolific author, having contributed chapters to numerous academic volumes on Armenia, regional security, and geopolitics.
