Ted Jonas

A US-trained and educated lawyer licensed in Washington DC, Ted brings 40 years of relevant experience to the Advisory Board of the EU Awareness Centre.
Ted first came to Georgia in 1994 as part of the original team that opened the office of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) in Tbilisi. He subsequently co-founded GCG Law Office, the first law firm acting for major international investors and financial institutions in Georgia. In addition to over 30 years of private law practice experience, including 10 years as DLA Piper’s managing partner in Tbilisi, Ted has worked in the U.S. non-profit, federal legislative and judicial sectors. He was a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives for four years (1984-88) and a law clerk for Judge Joseph W. Hatchett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. He served for several years on the Supervisory Board of one of Georgia’s two largest telecommunications providers, Silknet, and on the board of the Anaklia Development Consortium, which was developing a deepwater port on Georgia’s Black Sea coast with European, American and Georgian investors, before the project was terminated by Georgia’s current government. Ted currently serves on the Supervisory Board of the Caucasus Nature Fund, a Euro 100 million conservation trust fund that supports the protected areas of Georgia and Armenia.
Ted is a dual US – Georgian citizen who speaks Georgian and has lived in Tbilisi for many years. He received his B.A. degree in History from Cornell in 1984 and his J.D. from Cornell Law School, cum laude, in 1991.
