Statement on the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union
December 26, 2025
The dissolution of the Soviet Union marked the end of an empire, but not its narratives. Today, its narratives are being recycled to question independence and undermine democratic choice.
At the EU Awareness Centre, we believe that empowering societies with knowledge is the most effective way to resist manipulation. Revanchist forces should not pull back countries that regained their independence. Defending truth and the right of nations to choose their own future remains a shared responsibility.

As the year comes to an end, the Christmas and New Year period invites us to reflect. Across all of Europe and its eastern neighbourhood, the values of peace, freedom, and human dignity are under pressure as never before. Strengthening democratic resilience is therefore not a choice, but a necessity.
To address these challenges, the EU Awareness Centre was established to promote democratic reforms, good governance, and the principles that underpin the European Union in the EU’s eastern neighbourhood. While Georgia remains at the heart of our mission, our work extends to other EU-aspiring countries in the region, which face similar challenges: persistent disinformation, authoritarian narratives, and Soviet-era stereotypes that undermine trust, distort public debate, and weaken democratic institutions.
In less than a year since its establishment, the EU Awareness Centre has focused on building a strong analytical foundation, engaging the public through expert dialogue, and bringing experienced professionals and international advisers into its team. Through research, advocacy, and public engagement, we provide policymakers, civil society actors, and the broader public with fact-based information, develop credible assessments, foster informed discussion, and lay the groundwork for cooperation with civil society and European partners. These efforts are guided by a simple principle: democracy needs not only institutions but also informed citizens, for whom knowledge is the best defence against manipulation. Objective narratives must shape public discourse to sustain progress.
As we look ahead to the coming year, the challenges before us remain substantial. Yet so too does our determination. Advancing transparency, accountability, and democratic standards is not only vital for countries aspiring to join the European Union; it is a shared European responsibility. The security and stability of Europe depend on the success of democratic transformation in its neighbourhood. Therefore, the countries on Europe’s eastern frontier should not be seen as buffer zones, but as co-authors of the continent’s security and political order.
We invite all those who share these principles to stand with us. Support for the EU Awareness Centre, whether through engagement, advocacy, or financial contribution, is an investment in a more informed, resilient, and united Europe. Together, we can counter disinformation, strengthen democratic institutions, and support a European future based on freedom, dignity, and the rule of law.

Meet Our New Senior Research Fellows
December 14, 2025
We are delighted to welcome two outstanding personalities and colleagues to our team.
Ambassador Gocha Javakhishvili is a Georgian diplomat and academic with over 30 years of experience. He served as Ambassador of Georgia to France and Monaco and as Permanent Representative to UNESCO and other major international organisations. A specialist on the South Caucasus and European geopolitics, he is a Professor Emeritus and recipient of the French National Order of Merit and the Order of Academic Palms.
Dr Irakli Laitadze has extensive experience in Georgian diplomacy and the corporate, literary and cultural sectors. He served in Brussels and at the Embassy of Georgia in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. He holds degrees from Tbilisi State University, the Diplomatic School of Madrid, and Cambridge University, and is the author of three books, including Soviet Georgia – A Personal Journey Through Recent History, shortlisted for the 2025 SABA Literary Prize.
We look forward to working together to strengthen informed dialogue and European cooperation.
Statement of the EU Awareness Centre on Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is a reminder that dignity, freedom, and justice are not abstract principles — they are the foundation of every democratic society. Today, as we mark the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we also recognise how vulnerable these values remain across Europe’s neighbourhood.
For countries aspiring to join the European Union, the protection of human rights is not only a legal commitment but a strategic choice that defines their future. Upholding fundamental rights, safeguarding media freedom, ensuring an independent judiciary, and defending civil society are essential pillars of the European path.
In a time of intensified hybrid threats, disinformation, and democratic backsliding, the defence of human rights is inseparable from the defence of national resilience. Authoritarian pressure seeks to erode the very freedoms that anchor our societies. This is why every voice, every citizen, and every institution committed to human rights matters.
The EU Awareness Centre stands with all those in our region who work courageously to protect freedoms, advocate for justice, and defend the dignity of every person. Their efforts remain the strongest antidote to manipulation and coercion.
Statement on the First Anniversary of Georgia’s EU Integration Suspension

On 8 December, we mark European Flag Day — a celebration of the ideals that unite Europe.
In Georgia, this flag has become the emblem of a nation fighting for its European destiny. It rises above crowds demanding freedom, truth, and a place in the European family. It reflects the unbroken will of the Georgian people to secure their place in Europe and defend democratic values.

Meet Our New Research Fellows
December 2, 2025
We are delighted to announce that two outstanding professionals — Tornike Parulava and Giorgi Tumasyan — have joined our team. Their experience and vision will significantly strengthen the Centre’s work and support our efforts to promote transparency, democratic principles, and European values.
Tornike is a highly experienced diplomat who has held several important positions within Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the years. He served as deputy head at Georgia’s Mission to NATO and as Director of the Euro-Atlantic Integration Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Tornike’s expertise will considerably enhance the analytical capacity of our Centre.
Giorgi is a young leader and diplomat actively engaged in advancing the Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia and Armenia. He has served as Georgia’s Youth Delegate to the United Nations and as a Young European Ambassador. In 2025, the U.S. Department of State recognised him as an emerging leader. He is also a member of Stanford University’s Leadership Network for Change. Giorgi has chaired the Armenian Community Platform of Georgia and led multiple civic initiatives.
Statement on the First Anniversary of Georgia’s EU Integration Suspension

Today marks one year since the Georgian authorities, acting in violation of the Constitution and in disregard of the clearly expressed will of the Georgian people, suspended Georgia’s EU integration process. This decision not only contradicted the nation’s strategic aspirations but also undermined decades of progress, public consensus, and the sacrifices made by generations of Georgians in pursuit of a European future.
On this occasion, the EU Awareness Centre fully supports the statement issued by Georgian diplomats on 28 November 2025 and wishes to add that for Georgia, there is no alternative, whether in terms of security, economic development, democratic resilience, or cultural identity, to full membership in the European Union.
Georgia’s democratic backsliding is the direct result of Russia’s hybrid and cognitive warfare, driven by disinformation, propaganda, and coercion. If Georgia falls, others will inevitably follow, since the defence of each democracy strengthens all. The EU Awareness Centre, therefore, calls on international partners to support Georgian civil society, use all available tools to halt democratic backsliding, and stand with citizens peacefully defending their European future.
The EU Awareness Centre will continue to counter disinformation, challenge outdated Soviet-era narratives, and provide the public with clear, fact-based analysis. The Centre will continue to inform, engage, and advocate to ensure that Georgia’s European future remains protected and achievable.
Statement on International Disinformation Awareness Day

27 November marks International Disinformation Awareness Day. On this day, the EU Awareness Centre underscores the urgent need for collective resilience against foreign interference, manipulation, and information warfare.
Disinformation is no longer a peripheral challenge; it is a strategic tool used by authoritarian regimes to weaken democratic institutions, fracture societal trust, and undermine the European project. Russia’s long-standing hybrid campaign, intensified through its war against Ukraine and sustained operations across Georgia, Moldova, Armenia, and the wider region, extends far beyond Eastern Europe and targets audiences throughout the entire European continent and beyond. These efforts are amplified by local enablers, extremist groups, and individuals who knowingly or unknowingly echo anti-democratic narratives.
Today, we pay tribute to the journalists, analysts, civil society organisations, and volunteers who work tirelessly, often under pressure and threat, to expose falsehoods and defend the integrity of our public space. Their dedication reminds us that safeguarding democracy is not the responsibility of institutions alone; it requires the active participation of every citizen.
The EU Awareness Centre remains committed to promoting democratic values, strengthening media literacy, and supporting societies aspiring to join the European family. Protecting our information environment is essential to securing a free, prosperous, and resilient future for our region.
EU Awareness Centre Statement on the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

The EU Awareness Centre joins the global community in marking the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations, undermining dignity, equality, and the foundations of democratic society.
As an organisation committed to European values, human rights, and resilient democracies, we stand in solidarity with survivors and advocate for stronger protections, effective prevention, and zero tolerance for all forms of gender-based violence.
We call on governments, civil society, and international partners to work together to ensure that every woman and girl can live free from fear, coercion, and harm.

The European Commission’s 2025 Enlargement Report on Georgia delivers an expected verdict: after years of democratic progress, Georgia is not just facing a setback—it is missing the next round of EU enlargement. When another opportunity will come—or if it will at all—remains uncertain. For centuries, generations of Georgians have dreamed of their country being fully part of the European family, and over the past thirty years, Georgia has made significant efforts to turn this dream into reality, demonstrating courage, reform, and a strong commitment to democratic values.
Yet, when the opening of EU accession talks was within reach, Georgian authorities did everything in their power to prevent it. Its repressive actions, attacks on civil society, and hostility toward European norms have now put these achievements at risk. Rather than advancing toward Europe, Georgia is being pushed back into the sphere of Russian influence it has long sought to leave behind.
Even so, the EU Awareness Centre believes Georgia’s European future is not lost. The country’s true strength lies in its people, especially the young generation and in their unwavering commitment to democracy, human rights, and European values. This commitment remains the foundation on which Georgia can rebuild its European path and secure a democratic, prosperous future. The EU and its partners must continue to stand by Georgia’s citizens, offering guidance, support, and encouragement at this critical moment.
Meet Our New Research Fellows

EU Awareness Centre is proud to welcome two new Research Fellows, Ms Olga Spirandi and Mr Nikoloz Khatiashvili.
Two distinguished professionals whose expertise will further strengthen our mission to promote democratic values, good governance, and European integration.
Olga Spirandi is an experienced Georgian diplomat and civil servant with over 17 years of service in Euro-Atlantic integration, international security, and conflict resolution. As the former Head of the Euro-Atlantic Integration Coordination Division at Georgia’s MFA, she played a key role in advancing Georgia’s NATO path.
Nikoloz Khatiashvili, a former diplomat and current Senior Research Fellow at GEOCASE, brings over 18 years of experience in international relations, security, and democracy promotion. Founder of IWDL Georgia and lecturer at Tbilisi State University, he has authored more than 60 publications and contributed to projects with leading international partners.
EUAC is proud to welcome such accomplished experts whose knowledge and vision will enrich our research and advocacy work across Europe and beyond.

Statement on the Armenia–Azerbaijan Peace Initiative Facilitated in Washington

Yesterday in the Oval Office, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the facilitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, took a historic step toward peace. This statement is more than a document; it is a promise of a safer, more hopeful future for the South Caucasus.
We at the EU Awareness Centre celebrate this moment, the courage shown by Prime Minister Pashinyan and President Aliyev, and the role President Trump played in bringing them together.

Commemoration of the 9 April Tragedy

Today, we commemorate the tragic events of 9 April 1989, in Tbilisi, where peaceful demonstrators advocating for Georgia's independence were brutally attacked by Soviet/Russian troops. We honor the memory of those 21 who lost their lives and remember their courage, which eventually led Georgia to declare independence on the same day two years later. Let us build upon their legacy towards a strong and democratic Georgia.
